1. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) - A plastic commonly used to manufacture injection molded blank cards. See also PVC. 2. ACQ (Acquirer) - The entity, usually a bank, that processes a merchant's transaction, passing them onto the clearing house. 3. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) - The American national standards body overseeing the formation and implementation of standards within the US. A member body of ISO. 4. APDU (Application Protocol Data Unit) - The basic command unit used in communications between a Smart Card and an external device, comprising either command or response. 5. API (Application Programming Interface) - A set of programming tools that allow a developer to interface with other devices to program that device and/or extract information from that device. 6. ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) - A computer chip designed and manufactured for a specific purpose, such as a fingerprint sensor or smart card chip. 7. ATM (Automated Teller Machine) - Automatic machines often located away from banks, where customers can access their bank accounts and process transactions, usually withdrawing cash, at any time. 8. ATR (Answer To Reset) - The data sent by a Smart Card when it is first powered up, indicating card type, communication protocol, and other information about the card's architecture. 9. CA (Certification Authority) - A trusted third party within a public key cryptograhy system that verifies the identies of the parties involved in a transaction or data exchange. 10. CAT (Cardholder Activated Terminal) - A terminal that dispenses a product or service and is activated by the cardholder inserting their card. |
